Joined May 2, Messages 9, Which LSI card did you specifically buy? I purchased the one Chris mentioned in post 4. Joined Nov 9, Messages All my drives are brand new, but may not be on the Dell HCL, so that could be why I'm seeing a yellow indicator. Joined Aug 26, Messages Now, at first. This it totally unsupported by VMware or Dell, even if the firmware I'm flashing the card with is from Dell's website.

I'm basically trying to run a VSAN cluster on totally unsupported hardware like a lots of folks with homelabs. The firmware used is Dell's firmware. The H cards can be found on eBay for cheap and it's no wonder that it's quite popular among homelab users using ZFS builds based on OpenSolaris or Linux. There are IR firmware and IT firmware.

VMware vSphere 5. Here is a shot before and after…. Create a folder.

I called mine Dell. Then I went to Dell's website to get the firmware. In reality, there is another zip package with the exactly original firmware inside and which has all the necessary tools in it including the exact firmware file — the 6gbpsas.

Wipe the card completely otherwise sas2flsh do not recognize it as an LSI card so the sas2flsh commands don't work. One must use megarec command to do the work. This command wipes all except the hardware SAS address unique for each card which is good as you don't have to save it first to add it back later. Optional If you want to put the BIOS back in place you can, but you don't have to if you're using the card just for the passthrough.

But in my case I did not. You might do the same if you have an older board available. Pretty glad it worked for me and I managed to upgrade my cards which should get more performance and throughput for my homebrewed VSAN installation… As being said at the beginning, do at your own risk.

There is no official support for it from VMware or Dell. But with few precautions and with few hours of documentation through blogs and forums, it's quite easy at the end. The H are quite cheap on eBay and some of those guides are also flashing H cards as well which is a card with the same LSI hardware chip apparently.

Update: I have had one host which was taking a good 5 min to pass the boot sequence for the sas2flash when booting ESXi 6. So I followed this guide here from Dan Richardson to flash the card to the latest release 20 … but there were problems…. There is nothing wrong with this guide, but it basically flashes the IR firmware, not the IT firmware.

But what the hell I thougt. The firmware I had was an IT firmware! I double checked during the boot… strange situation…. Oh well, what I done is that I erased the card again. The problem was that after full wipe with the commands at the beginning of the post:. Then after erasing and trying different things again I have done this via UEFI and brought here another error:. Due to error remaining commands will not be executed.

It hasn't been updated sinceso the download links are likely out of date. I don't know if it will work with your configuration, but I would stick with software validated for that generation of servers. I installed 7.

How does everyone monitor their disk drive health?

I need to be able to see the health data and them put some alerting in place. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is this a production box and the only one? If not give it a try. Uninstalling is simple enough.

I have to verify how or if I got it working I know I had tried. This is my only box and definitely would painful if I had to rebuild it. I'm surprised it so difficult to monitor local drives.

ESXI 6.7 Install on the Dell R710 Server

Right now I have zero visibility into the health of my raid groups and if a drive did fail I would have no idea it happened not to mention identifying which drive failed. Am I approaching this the correct way? Joined: Aug 16, Messages: Likes Received: I have a H that is flashed to lsi ir mode and it reports disk health using the lsi smis provider on ESXi 5. I actually flashed back to Perc to support my raid10 group. Does the lsi smis provider apply to the Dell Perch flash? I installed 7.

Last edited: Nov 19, Took me all night last night to flash my 2 H and it is not without issue. The issue that I was having was that I had to reboot almost in every step or else the next step would end up in error.

Thanks again for all the instruction. Yep, very critical, that's why in my process of steps I explicitly listed reboot after each stage. The Dell HBA firmware already works. What's the point of flashing it all the way to LSI firmware? Vt-d works fine with Dell firmware. Is there documented issue with the Dell firmware? RyC Active Member. Joined: Oct 17, Messages: Likes Received: Even after restarting, that command would still fail.

I continued with the remaining steps, and they seemed to flash the IT firmware successfully, but the card BIOS wasn't erased. I ended up using the command sas2flsh -o -e 6, which seemed to wipe out both the firmware and the BIOS, then continued with the remaining sas2flsh steps and everything worked without errors. I also didn't have to restart between sas2flsh -0 -e 6 and sas2flsh -o -f it. RyCNov 20, Terry Kennedy Well-Known Member. Joined: Jun 25, Messages: 1, Likes Received: Is it enabled by default?

I have no raid config or anything on Controller. Esxi host cannot see disks being pass-through. Any ideas?

Pass-through mode for supported controller is not a editable property. Are you saying you are able to see disks inside controller but not in ESXi? Can you run the following command on the commandline of one of your esxi hosts and post the output here?

A list of physical disks is displayed. The status of the each disk is displayed under State. Hey Duncan, thanks for the info, you put me in the right direction. Great to hear. Have fun. Do note that the H has a very low queuedepth value, so your performance could be limited due to this.

Ya I have heard some people say the H isn't the greatest, have being looking other controllers from LSI etc but there is limited support for some of the Servers I am using. It does work though and is certified With the raid controller, i am able to create 2x magnetic disks for ESXi under raid 1, and the rest of the disks i will not assign any raid config.

Even you can have 1 magnetic disks with 1 SSD, and rest of the magnetic disks will not assign any raid config.

I don't have any first hand experience with the IT mode firmware experience, but I've heard that it will work with ESXi.

View solution in original post. Thanks for your reply. I'm quite new to ESXi so thanks for your advice.

I think I will get the SD card module, then. As to performance, the SSD solution is going to be faster, but it's going to be in a way where it doesn't really matter. It'll boot up faster, but that's going to really be it, and ESXi boot pretty quick anyway, because it's tiny. Once it boots up, it just runs in memory and performance would be the same.
